in ropes: Luisa

Rope teacher Isla Ika (FI)

I am Isla Ika, a thirty-something rope artist, switch, one of resident teachers of Helsinki Shibari and queer, with over ten years of experience in kink. I fell in love with ropes as a way to be present with others. I have studied rope both in Finland and abroad, even in Japan.

Ropes swept me away in 2018. As soon as I got my first ropes in my hands, I knew I had found my place. My fingers tingled. Everything seemed to click into place.

For me, rope is not just about technique, but above all a tool for presence and connection. I fell in love with ropes as a way to focus on another person more deeply than just chatting, and as an intense bodily experience that forces you to be in the moment. Tying is, for me, an antidote to a world that demands constant performance from us.

A good rope session, for me, is born from a curious encounter, not from a ready-made recipe. I’d rather be a tailor – I don’t sell off-the-rack clothes.

My background

I have studied the art of rope since 2018, both in Finland and internationally – even in Japan. I have received private instruction from, among others, Ceci Ferox (FI), Akechi Kanna (JP), Barkas and Addie (CAN), as well as Alexander MA and Natasha Nawataneko (GER). My teachers have inspired me to develop my own rope philosophy and have taught me a wide range of techniques.

Since 2019, I have taught the basics of rope, and since 2022, also more advanced workshops. My pedagogical background is not academic, but I am a service designer and have worked my whole life with content, stories, and experiences.

I have been especially praised for my gentle and creative approach, as well as my ability to meet people calmly and patiently.

My teaching style

Many workshops focus on rope and technique – I prefer to focus on the person in the ropes. Tying is not just about technique, but about connection, play, and bodily communication.

I want to teach you just enough technique so that you can forget about it. Then the rope becomes a shared play and connection, which can reveal something new about both of you.

Switch perspective

In rope, I am a switch – meaning I both tie and get tied. This gives me a lot of perspective on the dynamics of tying and the feelings it evokes from both roles.

I believe you learn to be a good rigger faster if you also experience what rope feels like against your own body. That’s why I recommend practicing self-tying and encourage role-switching in my workshops. In beginner courses, I always set aside time for this. Because sometimes the role you didn’t intend to try turns out to be your favorite!

My ethical principles

My work is based on feminist values and continuous reflection. I am committed to the Kink Educator’s Code of Conduct (KEMS principles), and I have no violations or accountability processes to report in the past ten years.

We take safety and consent seriously. I always hope for low-threshold feedback. You can contact me at any time or my feedback intermediary if you feel more comfortable talking to someone else. You can also give me anonymous feedback here.

I want to keep growing as a better and more ethical teacher. 💖

Workshops for groups

  • Are you interested in ropes, but starting out feels too difficult and technical? This beginner workshop, suitable for pairs, forgets technical tying instructions and focuses on the connection between the tying partners.

    • Introduction to what rope bondage is, and why people like to tie each other

    • Risks related to rope, nerve safety and negotiation skills for rope play

    • Simple rope techniques (single column tie, larks head, counter tension, how to end a tie)

    • Different ways to move together when another is tied up.

This workshop will give you the most essential tools to start your rope practice straight away, and have fun along the way.

  • Curious about exploring your kinks and fantasies through creative writing?

This workshop is a space to blend writing with kink and sexuality. We’ll dive into fun, supportive writing prompts — ranging from light and easy to more in-depth — designed to help you express yourself.

We’ll write together, and if you’re comfortable, you can share your work with the group.

No experience? No problem! Whether you're new to kink, writing, or both, this workshop is for everyone, as long as you’re okay with exploring potentially explicit content.

Bring along your favorite writing tools — whether that’s pen and paper or your go-to digital device. While digital is fine, I encourage writing by hand for a more relaxed, offline experience.

The class will be held in either Finnish or English, depending on the group’s preference, but you’re free to write in any language you feel most comfortable with.

Tickets are paid in advance via bank transfer, and before the workshop, you’ll receive some sample texts by email. These examples will help set the stage, so feel free to read through them before we meet.

  • After all fun rope play, untying might feel like a boring chore. It doesn’t need to be!

Untying can be big part of building the mood of a session, bring surprises or mindfucks, or an unpredictable, continuous cycle of tying and untying.

This workshop will offer new ideas for untying, and exercises, which will enhance your communication with ropes and make untying more interesting part of your rope practice.

Skill level: Participants know some essential rope techniques, like single column tie, some frictions, and how to end a tie.

  • In this workshop, we will learn my own hands front harness, which works great for multiple kinds of bodies, and is suitable for many kinds of suspensions.

In this workshop, we will learn the pattern and get ideas of how to use it on the floor and in the air, including transitions.

Skill level Multi level. If testing the harness on the floor, knowing some basic techniques like single column tie, frictions and how to end a tie.

If you want to test the harness in air, participants need to have solid knowledge of upline management and successful experiences with full suspensions.

  • Many rope workshops focus on learning the technical skills and forget the “soft skills” which make rope sessions truly rememberable. This workshop focuses only on skills that will enhance the play and communication between the partner tying.

During the workshop, participants will fill out their own “recipe card for a perfect rope session”, which can be used as a tool to plan better rope sessions together.

Skill level: Participants know some basic rope techniques, like single column tie, larks head, some frictions, and how to end a tie.

  • Semenawa means physically or mentally tormenting rope, and it has long roots in Japan, where rope has had a tight relationship with sadomasochism. Techniques and positions for semenawa are often taught seperately, one pattern at a time. It’s rarer to stop and think: what is semenawa really about? why it works, or doesn’t work? what do we want out of it?

    Skill level

    • Workshop includes powerful exercises that carry a strong emotional risk. Just watching a demo about inducing real mental or physical distress might be triggering, if you’re not familiar with this kind of rope play.

    • This workshop should not be anyone’s first workshop on rope session skills. Exercises are mentally challenging, and might evoke strong reactions. Participants should have solid experience in altered states of consciousness through sub/dom spaces from rope sessions or other high-risk practices, like BDSM.

  • Have you tied on the floor for some time, and are up for the extra challenge? This workshop focuses on the basic technique of rope suspensions, and how to make safe uplines.

  • Body manipulation is a popular term, that is often mentioned in rope workshops, but not always explained in detail, how body manipulation is done.

This workshop focuses only on body manipulation, twisting the body, and rotated movement. We’ll learn basics about torsions and deep-dive into body mechanics that bring rope harnesses to completely new dimension.

    Skill level:

    • Advanced participants only. Participants have experience doing semi- or full suspensions, and good handling of uplines.

    • Depending on the skill level, exercises can be done either as semi- or full suspensions.

Private lessons

In private lessons, you can choose exactly the topics that interest you, and you don’t have to share the teacher’s attention. Especially for more advanced students, private lessons are the best way to progress safely and quickly on your rope journey.

I am happy to teach private lessons on, for example:

  • how to start playing with ropes

  • self-tying / self-suspension

  • movement with and without ropes

  • the dynamics and pacing of a rope session

  • learning a specific tie (e.g. hands front strappado, TK, hands front harness, armbinder, tengu, basket tie, futomomo)

  • semi-suspensions, safe uplines

  • suspensions (on ring, bamboo, or pole/hashira)

  • semenawa (playing with difficulty/relief)

  • transitions on suspensions

Starting from €70 / hour. (Don’t hesitate to ask about low-income pricing or discounts for multiple sessions! I am happy to price my work on a social basis.)

Rope sessions

When ropes hug you, you can let go of your everyday worries. Surrender and relax into my talented hands.

I offer rope and BDSM sessions in Helsinki, Finland, within good reach with public transport. I can also travel to your location.

Me as a top

As a person tying, I’m specialiced in semenawa, a form of tormenting rope which creates physical or mental suffering. For many, it’s a pleasurable way to let go of your everyday self and go deep into yourself and your body.

I’m very emphatic and sensitive person, so I’m also very happy to tie people up in a gentle and caressing way. A rope session can be completely pain-free and focus on gentle touch and care.

All contact with me happens with confidentiality.

For me, it’s important to negotiate well what the session includes, and make sure everything we do is wanted and consensual.

All kinds of genders, ages (as long as you’re over 18), bodies, disabilities and backgrounds are warmly welcome! ❤️

A rope session with me can be:

  • Gentle and connective touch with rope

  • Being tightly bound in the relaxing hug of ropes

  • Ropes that include pain, to challenge the body and the mind

  • Session with sensory restrictions (to sight or hearing)

  • BDSM elements (e.g. play with power dynamics, D/s, spanking, fetishes, role play…)

  • Being partly or fully suspended in the air (semi suspensions, full suspensions or transitions in the air = moving from one position to another)

  • Shared self-tying moment or guiding your self-tying (with my voice)

I will always discuss your hopes with you. Together we’ll plan a session which fits to our common interests and boundaries.

Please note: My sessions don’t usually include any kind of genital contact (touch under or over your underwear). Ask separately if you want to hear about exceptions.

Why to pay for a rope session?

You might have noticed that there are more people who want to get tied up than there are riggers who are safe, trustworthy, and skilled. Safe and skilled riggers are often in high demand and, therefore, very busy.

I want to offer rope sessions so everyone who wants to, can get tied up. You compensate for my time and expertise, which are among the best in Finland.

With a competent rigger, you can let go of the fear of unsafe practices or someone who just wants to get into your pants.

Rope sessions are a service, where you can freely express your hopes and demands – I’m happy to listen!

f you’re new to ropes, a skilled rigger will know how to proceed at a comfortable pace. You don’t need to know if you even like being tied up – I’m very happy to help you find out!
